About
What Muneyoshi Yanagi wanted to show
The only official catalogue published before his death in three volumes.
Muneyoshi Yanagi established a completely different standard of beauty from the past and proposed a "measure" of beauty called "folk art. However, Yanagi's assertion that there is more to be seen in the miscellaneous vessels actually used in daily life than in aristocratic objects or works for appreciation has often been misunderstood. Yanagi's argument has often been misunderstood, as if he was denying the works of individual artists, or if anything is beautiful as long as it is a daily craft. In his later years, Yanagi gathered the collective efforts of his fellow mingei artists and comprehensively presented what they considered to be beautiful with illustrations and detailed explanations in this "Mingei Zukan" (Illustrated Book of Folk Crafts). The first volume introduces excellent Japanese ceramics, textiles, folk paintings, toys, metalwork, woodwork, stonework, and more. Three volumes in total.
Muneyoshi Yanagi: 1889-1961. Founder of the Mingei movement. Established the Japan Mingeikan, a private museum in Komaba, Tokyo, to show the "standard of beauty," the law behind beautiful things.
