About
This photobook presents a comprehensive catalog of Keizo Kitajima’s work from 1975 to 1991, published in conjunction with his solo exhibition at the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography in 2009. Kitajima, born in Nagano, Japan, began his journey in photography during high school and later trained with some of Japan’s most influential photographers, including Daido Moriyama, at the iconic "WORKSHOP" school. Kitajima and his peers created a new wave in the Japanese photography scene, founding the independent gallery "Image Shop CAMP" in Shinjuku. Here, he launched the innovative project "Photo Express," showcasing his fresh snapshots in mini-booklets shortly after capturing them in the city streets.
Kitajima’s career gained momentum after moving to New York, where he captured the gritty street life of the city with striking flash photography. His photobook New York won him the prestigious Kimura Ihei Award. As his career progressed, he traveled across Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union, where his style evolved toward more introspective portrait and landscape work, reflecting a nuanced approach to human dignity and solidified landscapes.
Keizo Kitajima 1975-1991 captures this journey, tracing the development of his early, raw snapshots to his later, more reflective works.
